Honor Prince’s Legacy with 3D Printed Statue of Famous Symbol

At TinkerMake I thought it would only be appropriate if I honored seven-time Grammy winner Prince with some 3D printed love. Known for megahits like “When Doves Cry” and “Purple Rain,” he passed at the age of 57 on 4/21/16.

To keep it simple I looked for the one thing that was instantly recognized as Prince, and I could choose no better than the unpronounceable symbol he chose when he was stripped of his name during his battles with Warner Music.

I was able to locate some great vector sources for this file to generate a 3D printed sculpture I’ve shared on Thingiverse for others to print and customize.

Overview of Design to 3D Print Process

I sourced a great SVG file from Wikipedia and used this as the basis for the line art I would import into Fusion360 and create a 3D object.

Once I chose a drawing, I brought it into Fusion360 as an SVG and extruded the drawing to add dimension.

After I generated a 3D model I liked, I then modified the dimensions to make sure it would print on one of our 3D printers and that the overall proportions looked right.

I then added a base, some materials and rendered it to make sure it looked absolutely awesome.

Next step is to take make sure it’s a tight design, send to Simplify3D to generate tool paths and print on one of our 3D printers.

Once printed, assemble the parts and enjoy.
